Introduction to Mushroom Dyeing

Discover the fascinating world of natural dyeing and learn how to transform wool yarn into beautiful, earthy colors using wild mushrooms. During this hands-on workshop, we will explore how different species of dye mushrooms can create a surprisingly rich color palette. While many people assume that mushrooms only produce shades of brown, they can also yield vibrant yellows, warm oranges, deep reds, soft purples, and a wide range of subtle, muted tones. We will begin by preparing the wool with alum, which helps the natural pigments bond to the fibers. The mushrooms are then gently simmered to release their color before the yarn is immersedin the dye bath. Along the way, we will discuss the characteristics of different dye-producing mushrooms and sustainable harvesting. One unique aspect of mushroom dyeing is how the wool's natural color influences the final result. If you use yellow dye on white wool, you’ll get a bright yellow, but if you apply the dye to grey wool, the result will be green. After the dyeing process, the mushrooms can be returned to nature, where they continue to play an important role in forest ecosystems. Although some dye mushrooms are poisonous if eaten, the finished yarn is not toxic, as only the color pigments bind to the wool fibers.

Whether you are a knitter, weaver, textile artist, or simply curious about natural color, this workshop offers an opportunity to experiment with one of the oldest and most magical forms of textile dyeing. You will leave with your own hand-dyed yarn and a deeper understanding of how the colors of the forest can be transformed into lasting textiles.

What to Bring: A notebook, a pencil, gloves, and clothes you feel comfortable working in, as it can get messy (we have lab coats for you to put over your clothes if needed).

The workshop will be facilitated by designer Sandra Capuzzi and will be conducted in English.
